革翅目（Dermaptera）這個名稱源自希臘語（derma = 皮膚；pteron = 翅膀），指的是前翅的皮膚樣外觀。

The order name Dermaptera is derived from Greek (derma means skin; pteron means wing) and refers to the skinlike appearance of the forewings.

Forewings are short and smooth, modified in elytrum, not functional for flying

Hindwings are membranous and semicircular

耳夾子蟲這個名字來自一個古老的英國神話，傳說耳夾子蟲在你睡覺時會爬進你的耳朵，並在你的大腦中產卵。但是，這只是因為耳夾子蟲是夜行性和喜歡裂縫而產生的誤解。

The name earwig comes from an old English myth that earwigs crawl into your ears when you are sleeping and lay eggs in your brain. Fortunately, this is only a misunderstanding and comes from the fact that earwigs are nocturnal and like dark crevices.
