Hong Kong Jumping Spider Photo Contest

Spider Photo Contest_IG Post.png

The diversity of spiders is astonishing with nearly 50,000 species globally! In Hong Kong, the full diversity of spiders is still largely underappreciated and new spider species are frequently recorded or described, such as the surprising caterpillar-mimicking jumping spider, Uroballus carlei, described in 2019.

Spiders play fundamental roles in ecosystems and for human societies, but are, unfortunately, often under-appreciated by the public. As predators, spiders regulate the populations of many species of insects and other arthropods consuming 440 to 880 million tons of prey annually (equivalent to the weight of all living humans ingested each year). They are also a main food source for many other animals like birds, frogs, lizards or geckos, who directly depend on them for their survival!
