One highlight of our skeleton specimens is the enormous skull💀 of a #Humphead_Wrasse (𝘊𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘴 𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘴 (Rüppell, 1835)), which was donated by Prof. Yvonne Sadovy of the School of Biological Sciences at HKU.

In its common name, “humphead” refers to the #prominent_hump on its forehead. You may also notice its #sexy_plump_lips👄. Interestingly these features only appear in sexually mature males, indicating that they have entered the reproductive stage.

Humphead Wrasse mainly live in the Indo-Pacific waters, but are uncommon as they usually live independently or in small social units. However, during reproduction, they gather to form large #spawning_aggregations, reaching numbers of tens to more than one hundred fishes.

Not many fish can #change_sex like Humphead Wrasse😮. Most of them are born as female with gonads of both sexes. Starting from their 9th year, the largest female may transform into male in response to the loss of males and maintain the sex ratio👫 in the population.

Unfortunately, it is now threatened by overfishing, and has been considered as an endangered species since 2004. However, you can #be_part_of_the conservation solution 🙋. You just need to take pictures of Humphead Wrasse sold on markets and upload the photos to the locally developed application #Saving_Face. This will help AFCD in tracking and identifying individuals sold illegally.
